Sustainability at the
Berghotel Zum Zirm

We want to take care of what surrounds us.

Our home is where the forest begins and the Rittner Horn is practically on the doorstep. At 1,530 metres, high on the Ritten plateau.

Up here, the air smells of forest and sometimes of Swiss stone pine. The water comes from the mountain. Game, herbs and many of the ingredients used in our kitchen have not travelled far.

For us, treating this place with care is not a new trend. It is part of everyday life at Berghotel Zum Zirm – sometimes clearly visible, sometimes simply happening in the background.

Sustainability Label South Tyrol – Level 2

The Sustainability Label South Tyrol recognises accommodation providers that meet defined environmental, social and economic criteria and review their development on an ongoing basis. The label has three levels.

We have achieved Level 2.
For us, the award is not the finish line. It shows where we stand today and reminds us to keep looking closely at what we can improve.

What we already do today

No huge promises. We prefer concrete measures.

Heat from South Tyrol

Our hotel is heated with pellets from South Tyrol. For our heating system, we therefore use a regional fuel with short transport routes.

100% green electricity from South Tyrol

Our hotel uses 100% green electricity from Alperia, generated by hydropower plants in South Tyrol.

Slippers only if you need them

We do not automatically place disposable slippers in every room. Feel free to bring your own. If you need a pair, slippers are available at reception for €5. Sometimes using less really is that simple.

No minibar in every room

We have deliberately chosen not to install an individual minibar in every guest room. Instead, a shared refrigerator is available for our guests.

Room cleaning four times a week

Rooms are normally cleaned four times per week. If you would like daily cleaning, simply let us know. Fewer cleaning cycles also mean less laundry, water, cleaning products and energy. Comfort should not suffer – which is why the choice remains yours.

Towels: you decide

One simple rule:
Hung up: I will use my towel again.
On the floor: Please replace it.

Avoiding waste before it is created

We separate our waste carefully, but we prefer to start one step earlier: before waste is generated. This includes reducing single-use items and handling food and packaging thoughtfully.

Regional cuisine on the Corno del Renon

From the region. And often from our own kitchen.

In the mountains, the seasons are impossible to ignore. What is growing, being harvested or available at the time shapes a large part of our cooking. South Tyrolean dishes meet Mediterranean influences – rooted in the region without being heavy.

Whenever possible and when the quality meets our standards, we choose regional and seasonal produce.

  • Fruit and vegetables preferably from South Tyrol
  • Dairy products from South Tyrolean dairies
  • Bread from a local bakery, with some breads homemade by Erika
  • Regional game specialities
  • Homemade dumplings and fresh pasta
  • A selected wine and drinks list with a focus on South Tyrol and Mediterranean regions
  • Vegetarian dishes are available every day. We do not offer a vegan cuisine. Gluten-free and lactose-free options can be prepared with prior notice; depending on the additional effort, a surcharge may apply.

Fresh from our herb garden, forest and meadows

Herbs that do not need to travel far.

Some of the flavours in our kitchen grow right around the hotel. Depending on the season, we use fresh herbs and edible flowers from our herb garden, the surrounding meadows and the forest.

They become part of our dishes, homemade teas and refreshing herbal drinks. At times, Swiss stone pine and spruce add their distinctive local aromas. Not because we are looking for something exotic. Simply because they grow here.

You will also find our herbs in the wellness area, where homemade teas and smoothies are served at the herb bar.

Zum Zirm mountain spring water

Our water comes from the mountain.

Fresh spring water from our own source on the Rittner Horn flows throughout the hotel. You can drink it directly and refill your own water bottle whenever you like.

We also serve our mountain spring water at the restaurant table, for which a service fee applies. There is no need for single-use water bottles.

A car-free holiday in South Tyrol

Your car can take a holiday too.

The bus stop is right in front of the hotel. From here you can travel to Klobenstein/Collalbo and continue on the historic Rittner Railway to Oberbozen/Soprabolzano. The Ritten cable car then takes you down to Bolzano. Many other destinations throughout South Tyrol are also easy to reach by public transport.

With the Südtirol Guest Pass / Ritten Card, our guests can use the included public transport services without additional fares and benefit from further services and the weekly programme.*

*Always link the services and validity to the current Ritten Card conditions.

Ski holiday on the Rittner Horn – right outside the door

The Rittner Horn cable car valley station and the ski slope are directly next to the hotel. In the morning, it really can be as simple as: ski boots on, step outside and get into the gondola.

No daily drive and no extra ski bus to the ski area. Ski school and ski rental are also available on site.

Rooted in the region

Regional does not end at the breakfast buffet.

Wherever it makes sense, we work with producers, craftspeople, suppliers and service providers from South Tyrol. Short distances are one benefit. Just as important to us are reliability, quality and relationships that grow over many years.

For us, strengthening the local economy also means keeping as much as possible of what a hotel needs within the region.

Your SIMPLE contribution

The forest begins right outside the door. When you live and work at 1,530 metres on the edge of the woods, nature does not need to become a holiday concept. It is simply part of every day.

So we ask our guests for something very simple: enjoy this place in a way that leaves it just as enjoyable for those who come after you.

  • Use a refillable bottle and fill it with our mountain spring water
  • At the buffet, take what you need and come back for more rather than wasting food
  • Stay on the paths and avoid disturbing wildlife
  • Use water and electricity thoughtfully
  • Travel by public transport when possible
  • A holiday does not need to be perfect. A little awareness often goes a long way.

What comes next?

We regularly review where we can develop our hotel in a meaningful way. Not every good idea can be implemented immediately. And something that is only planned should not yet be presented on a website as an achievement.

That is why we prefer to talk about measures that have actually been implemented and can be verified.

In the end, it should simply feel like a holiday.

You do not come here to think about sustainability strategies. You come for the mountains. For the quiet. Perhaps for that first coffee with a view, for a day on the Rittner Horn or for dinner as the light slowly disappears behind the forest.

Our job is to make sure that a great mountain holiday and a mindful way of looking after our home fit together as naturally as possible.

Welcome to Berghotel Zum Zirm.
At 1,530 metres on the Rittner Horn.
